The Toyota/Save Mart 350
Infineon Raceway
Sonoma County, California, June 24-26, 2011

NASCAR runs two events on road courses.
AND
Infineon is the most challenging.

YOU GOTA BE THERE!

The Sprint Cup Series makes its annual visit to Wine Country for the race at Infineon Raceway. Infineon and Watkins Glen are two road race courses, that the hard pounding NASCAR teams run, and Infineon is rated the most difficult to negotiate.

The obvious difference between oval and road course racing is the left and right turning of the road course with slow speed corners thrown in for good measure. 3 wide is not a thing one will see on most road courses but tire to tire banging is.

There is some talk about adding more road course into the NASCAR series of races. There are groups of fans, both for and against, and each group have good points about keeping things as is and for making the change.

The best point brought out from the 'oval' group is the high speed that the oval cars can bring to the fans. Not to mention the 3-wide cornering at over 100 MPH. This is good stuff and no other form of racing will create this kind of visual excitement.

The point which the 'road course' group leans on is that the slower corners can bunch up the cars and give the fans some of that door-to-door banging that the new NASCAR Official Designed car has taken away.

How come no one has mentioned adding a new concept to this discussion and let the boys run on the High Banks of Daytona, but do the infield section also. That may be just the new buz that the race series needs.

Full List Finishing Order 2011-pdf

The road course held up to it's reputation and gave everyone a show. The only car I can remember seeing finish without a dent was the winning Car 22 of Kurt Bush. There were several lead changes so Kurt did not just run away and hide. Only skilful driving keeps the car out of harms way, well maybe he had some luck too.

Jeff Gordon gave a hard run at the end and made up several spots, finishing in second place and closing in on Kurt. Jeff had been all over the field with an ill handling car finally getting to go at the very end, but ran out of laps before getting on the bumper of the hard running Kurt.

It looked like an demolition derby at the end. Cars running around the track with no front end, no back end and dents and tire marks on the sides.

Cars were spinning on the course, cutting through the dirt, and sitting on the tire barricades. At lease no one went over and ended on top. However 32 of the 43 cars finished the 110 laps with only 5 not running at the end.
