Concorso Italiano®
August 19, 2011
Monterey, California
The 2011 Concorso Italiano® came off with a great showing of cars and people. The field was changed around from last year, giving a more compact feel and allowed easy movement around the different groups of cars. The unique bit that is a Concorso standard, is the ongoing-show a the center stage with interviews of personalities and displays of cars.
One might say the surprise of the day, especially so expressed by Mr. Vasquez, was the Best of Show Award going to his 1953 Fiat Stanguellini. This car has some history with the other Stanguellini B.A.T. cars of Alfa pinnings. However there should be no challenge to the judges decisions, as this was a rare and well presented car. That is what the Concorso Italiano® is all about.

The Concorso Italiano will return August 19 for another incarnation. The location again will be the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey. There will be the roughly 1,700 exotic automobiles, mostly but not entirely Italian. Many Ferraris and Lamborghinis will be present, also Alphas, Maseratis, and...just too many to mention. Other non-Italian marques expected are the Panteras, Porsches, and...yes many. All this on the lovely green grass carpet at Golf Ranch. Expect long aisles of numerous booths presenting displays, vendors wares, and food. Do not miss the stage area where live presentations about the cars rolling through will occur.
If you become bored with all this, and I can not imagine anyone who could be, then consider taking part in the following ten attractions at the Concorso Italiano.
• Join the Alfresco Luncheon where Chateau Julien will bring their wines to taste.
• View the stark contrast between black and white in Italian cars. The "matted out look" will be displayed alongside white Italian marques in a unique comparison.
• Stroll through the Classic Ferrari display of cars in an area set aside on the lawn. Only Ferraris built before the 246 GTS Dino qualify, including the 246 GTS, a few supercars, and some F1s.
• Do not miss the Lamborghini Aventador billed as outrageously advanced. Recently introduced at the 2011 Geneva auto show, the Aventador employs F1 style suspension and carbon fiber monocoque chassis.
• Stroll through the assembly of F50s, the third of Ferrari"s supercars to be honored in the past three years. The F50, the curvaceous sister of last year"s planar F40, will be out in force at this reunion.
• Watch to catch a glimpse of Lamborghini"s renowned former chief test driver Valentino Balboni, after whom the Lamborghini model LP550-2 was named. Although recently retired, he will be in attendance.
• See the Vintage Ferrari Concours. These are pre-2002 Ferraris which will be judged according to specific IAC/PFA professional standards.
• View the rare 1970 Miura Lamborghini in original condition owned by Jeff Meier.
• Check out Deke Williams 1974 Dino Ferrari 246GTS in the Centerpiece Display.
• See the display of Original and/or Barn Finds. As the saying goes "You can only have an original car once." The rules are "Just wash it, and bring it."

CONCORSO Italiano®,
This year The Celebration of
Italian Style™ Celebrates Original and Barn Finds
I call them "Time Capsules".
"Barn Finds" or Classics in their original "discovered" condition are all the rage on the Show Car circuit. The Concorso is highlighting this class of cars this year with a special Centerpiece Display area.
I have long believed in the World of Cars, where examples are literally Works of Industrial Art, the mortals who have become their "Keepers", have the responsibility to preserve history and not make history or rewrite that cars story.
What outcry, if and owner of a Rembrandt, removed all the paint down to the canvas and had a contemporary artist apply a new paint in the "spirit" of the original painter, just so the final painting would not "show" all those "age" cracks.
Cars currently listed for the "Centerpiece" are:

The Concorso is not just a show, but a gathering, a field of cars and people meeting and sharing. And to that end, The Concorso plays host for Reunions of models and makes of note. This year:
45 years from the introduction of the Maserati Ghibli Coupe at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. A Giorgetto Giugiaro design from his Ghia years.
And
40th anniversary of the Maserati Bora with on stage presentation of beautiful examples and commentary by the director of the Factory Historical Department.
Following a long line of Concorso Ferrari Reunions, the Ferrari F50 Reunion was at this years event
From a long time attendee. the Concorso presents more Italian cars than one person can see and enjoy in one long day. The overall collection of events, shows and displays are a sensory-over-load of car and Italian fast living.
Fantastico!
