Brussels Autoworld Museum 2014 Maserati Photographs
All Car Central's great friend in Brussels sent us his photos and thoughts on the latest display noting the 100 years of the Maserati.(Ed.)
OK, I am a bit late getting this off my desk ... new job and all that ... stopped by the Brussels auto museum last thing heading out ... saw a lot of nice iron ...
Something there is about a caterpillar's view of a plateau of Maserati (what is the plural? a collective? ... )
But perhaps I should back up ... there is a regular rotation coming around my old neighborhood in Brussels ... on my last day I stopped off to visit, and could not resist a wing through ...
Porsche was here in January, now it is Maserati's turn ... to shine ...
Something there is about the 70's ... were you there?
The orange metal flake? Were you there?
Chrome, knock-off's ...
Is a good family fun event now though ...we do not really discuss the 70's ... not with the younger generation about ... it is nice to see the excitement ...
Am having fun with the interiors and the reflections off of the plate glass ... remember the bad AC systems, the blazing Italian, Southern France and California sun, the heat, turning the interiors into, well, not saunas, but ovens, ovens of baked plastic and hot leather ...
But the magic forked trident ..
And a small small script, to tel you that under this shiney paint, is a superlight body that is ready to race ...
But such pretty pretty paint, would one wish to?
And that old heavy chrome, not of the new plasticized, chrome panels, have you seen the new Fords? ... this is chrome that will not be moved ...
Forgive me if I play with lights and shiney bits far too much, I've a few hundred ‘normal' shots of gorgeous cars ... they are lovely, but something about this day is wishing me to share an ‘altered state' with you ...
Sigh, an old racer, huge front drum brakes, the suspension system, still wearing the patina of age, the metal seeming to glow with an inner light
And a proud racer, still hitting the local circuits, with the control technique saying she is inspected and prepped to get out on the track, classic races, well, they are a thing ...
Am I really seeing a 'boost' gauge on this oldtimer? Dunno what all the gauges mean, but I am loving the look despite my shakey hand held outa focus shots...
Oh yes, lots pretties to wander about, I have many names and tags , but let me try and be less encyclopedic and a bit more experiential ...
Can you experience, the feeling, the RPM gauge burbling a bit, the fuel gauge bouncing as it idles, checking the oil and water temp to be sure you do not overheat as you idle at the starting gates?
Or, better yet, almost no gauges, trust to your ears, to the vibrations through the non-cushioned seats, and the smell, you can smell the oil heating, the unburnt fuel, the intangible feeling of a hot engine, a motor, the transmission right there, the flex of the body as it rolls through every corner and bump ...
Oh, but do step out a second, and take in those hips, the rear wheel covers, and the heatreats, the aged leather straps , the poor fit and finish between the body panels and the door, this was all hand done, has been raced hard, will be raced hard again, repairs in between ...
Sigh, a birdcage ... you see how they got their name, the thimble thin wire frame interior, all in the name of lightness, something, just the least amount you can have, to hold the sheet metal and the wind stream at bay ...
But then you need to hold the steering wheel up, and the gear shift gate (such a lovely gate!) and the pedals ... and run a few exposed wires and conduits to the gauges ... raw essences ...
Such lovely pieces of metal ... metal working was and is and can be such an art, 3-d printing , well it just does not feel ... imagine the hands that snipped the sheet metal ...
Oh, and a St. Christopher medal, this was the era when many pilots experienced serious harm, but less thought about that now the better ... oh, those white-faced gauges ...
They really did a lovely job on the display, setting the hanging strings to give a gauze effect between the upper plateau and the lower and to really diffuse the light ... but oh my, what an array ....
May I please, have just one?
There are so many after all ... may I take this one home?
Oh, but this is the route outside my office garage these days, I decamp for Luxembourg soon, maybe room in a new garage there for a nice piece of lovely Italian metal ...
