The Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California this May 18-19 of 2013 was quite a show. There were a great number of cars ranging from a1911 National 40 to 1991 Mustang in the Historic IMSA GTO-SCCA Trans-Am group. A lot to motor history to take-in over one weekend.
The featured Make was Corvette, and there were a lot of them. From 1955 to 1976 and they were all going as fast as they could. the highlight in my opinion was the very rare 1956 SR2 on display.
There were qualifying heats for all Saturday with Sunday set to racing from 8:30 AM to 5:PM. The best race of the day in my opinion was the 8:30 first off the line Group 1 comprised of 1962-1967 under 2Lt Production/GT cars.
These boys and girls were in a hurry. They were 3 and 4 wide in most all corners and passing each other on every part of the track. This bunch showed us what racing used to be about. None of this running nose to tail for Xteen laps just to have a last ferw yards passing attempt for the win.
The under 2Lt cars are quick but not so powerful that a non-pro driver is intimidated by the machine. Therefore it was peddle to the metal and doors to wheels racing. the cars are all readily distinguished from each other in shape and style. One does not need to remember the color as the shape of the cars are totally different. From the 'flying' shoebox' mini to Jeff Kline's mini E Type Jag looking, 1964 Ginetta.
There were Spins and off-road-into-the-dirt at Turn 2, my favorite place to watch. The group that is growing each year is the bunch I refer to as the 'Thunder Cars' the Trans-Am and Grand National Stock cars. These loud V8's thunder around the course giving a good show. Also in this bunch are the IMSA GTO. Of course there were the CAN-AM cars with their un-limited engine and design.
At the other end were the very delicate Formula cars. Thunder and Formula. Race cars and production models. As I said a lot of history going by us and quickly too.
