Best of Show
1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 17, 2014)

Excited cheers echoed across the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links Sunday when a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe was named Best of Show at the 64th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The car, owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington, was the first postwar car to take the top award at the prestigious event in nearly five decades. It was also the first Ferrari to win.
"This is a road-going Ferrari, and it has had quite the famous life having been designed by Sergio Scaglietti for Roberto Rossellini," said Chairman Sandra Button. "Its design was also trend-setting. So it is fitting that this is our first postwar winner in many years." The last postwar car to be named Best of Show was a 1964 Maserati Mistral Coupe, which topped contenders back in 1968.
When asked about the significance of the win by his postwar car, Shirley said, "I just hope it means that some more will have the chance to do the same thing. There are some wonderful coachbuilt postwar cars, and I think the owners should bring them here and try for the Best. I've won Best of Show before but this was really a special thrill to do it with this car." Shirley, the former president of Microsoft, previously won in 2008 with a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta.
Surprises and Improvements.
The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2014 was in this writers opinion the best laid-out and executed of all since I have been covering since 2007.
Surprises: Best of Show went to a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe. This was a stunning car and deserved the award. The surprise is the BofS in the recent past has been going to a different 'class' of cars or prewar cars, which one can say is a group of cars that can overwhelm the senses with the inherent extravagancy of the coachbuilders of the time. The other surprises were: A 1952 Jaguar XK120 receive a First place in Postwar Sports Racing and the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy and a 1951 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe receive a First place in Postwar Touring. Again highly deserving cars but this day the Jaguars came out of the shadows of past years being wallflowers.
Improvements: So what was great about the 2014 extravaganza of over the top lavish cars and display of people? (Yes I meant to say it that way). Without saying, when it comes to The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the selection committee always fields the greats cars in the world. Ever since way back, I remember the organizers have been blessed with too many people wanting to join in and see what the greatest cars in the world looks like, and this has always caused an overabundance of people trying to walk around the beautiful lawn of the final 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Large numbers of people have always made it difficult to see the cars, and that is what everyone came to do. Last year, 2013, the number of cars was reduced witch seem to improve the overall viewing pleasure, but this year it was even better.
The 2014 display had fair spacing between cars and that was very good allowing excellent viewing opportunities and the display was also expanded with a fantastic collection of Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa race cars set beyond the usual bounds of the previous years display area.
The other welcomed improvement? Someone addressed the 'Show at the Ramp' and the timing from start to the presentation of the Best of Show. We come from all over the world to see the cars and be entertained but some of the 'pomp' did extend the final celebration of the Best of Show a bit too far around the dial of the lapsed-time clock. This year felt like some improvement in this area.
