The Serbian car maker Zavod Crvena Zastava in Kragujevac started production, near the end of 1955, of the Zastava car for Eastern European markets under license from Fiat and continued untill 2008.
The early Zastava models were modified Fiats or Fiat-based, and in 2008, Zastava was bought-out by Fiat and became a Fiat car factory, renamed to Fiat Automobili Srbija or "Fiat Automobiles Serbia".

Zastava 750 is also called by its nickname "Fića" or "Fićo" in Serbian, Montenegrin, Croatian and Bosnian The nickname "Fića" comes from the main character of a comic published during the first years of the car's production.
