Goodwood Revival 2011
Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, UK
September 16-18, 2011
From the 16th to the 18th of September the Goodwood Revival winds back the clock with cars from the golden age of motor sport going wheel to wheel on the Goodwood Motor Circuit. The Revival hosts many legendary drivers like Gerhard Berger, Jochen Mass and Derek Bell to F1's Red Bull Christian Horner and Adrian Newey. The racing is close with paint swapping and bumper to bumper action, and the sight of seeing the monster Ford Galaxie 500 battling the little Mini Cooper S brings a smile to any petrol heads face.
It really is an an eclectic mix of cars over the weekend on the classic Goodwood circuit, from a 1931 Bugatti Type 54 to the beautiful Ferrari 250 GTO, in 16 races including some classic motor bikes in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy.
But the winding back of the clock does'nt stop with the cars on track, Routemaster buses and red phone boxes to a period Tesco supermarket and a Kenwood shop add to the attmosphere. The attending public are also encouraged to dress in period clothes and a dress code of jacket, shirt and tie for gentlemen and a dress or suit for ladys is needed to enter the paddock area, it all good fun. Back on track and the marshals and mechanics are also dress up in their white overalls and flat caps.

One of the greatest racing drivers that ever lived - Juan Manuel Fangio had a tribute to him noting the centenary of his birth and 60th anniversary of his winning the first of his five World Championships.
Fangio's best result at Goodwood was a second in the challenging BRM V16 P15 on 26 September 1953, which will be just one of over 25 of the most famous cars that Fangio drove, that are scheduled to be available at this years event.
Also available were two of his earliest racing cars which was shipped over specifically for the Revival from the Fundacion Museo Fangio in Argentina; his famous 1939 Chevrolet Coupe TC and the 1947 Volpi Chevrolet 'La Petisa.'
Other significant cars as part of this tribute included the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR and W196s, Fangio's Alfa Romeo Tipo 158/9 'Alfetta', Ferrari 860 Monza, Gordini Type 15s and 16, Maserati 250F, 300S and 450S.
The 2011 Goodwood Revival is billed as "A Magical step back in time", and is the only event of its kind that relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit and is staged entirely in a nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It is also the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year.
An additional unique feature; the majority of visitors wear appropriate period clothing and no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend.
Adding to the overall effect, there are also theatrical sets dating to the past life style and an aviation celebration with stunning aerial maneuvers throughout the day noting the history of this WWII former aerodrome. On static display are a fantastic selection of rarely-seen pre-1966 aircraft in the Freddie March 'Spirit of Aviation'.
For three days each September, this historic circuit stages a race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have competed at Goodwood during 1948-1966.
Many of these important historic racing cars were driven by famous drivers from the sports past and present. Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Sir Jack Brabham, Derek Bell, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Gerhard Berger, Johnny Herbert, Wayne Gardner, Giacomo Agostini and the late, great Barry Sheene and Phil Hill.
Each year, around 360 cars and motorcycles compete in 16 different races, with race names of historical reference. Entry is by invitation only from the Earl of March.
Highlights at the 2011 Goodwood Revival (16-18 September) include:
A Jaguar E-type-only race to mark 50 years of this important sportscar.
A tribute to Juan Fangio, 100 years after his birth.
A daily track parade of British-built Ford vehicles to honor the century of Ford in Britain.
The 75th anniversary of the Supermarine Spitfire will also be celebrated, with the greatest gathering of these evocative aircraft at Goodwood since the its active duty day as a Battle of Britain RAF Air Base in World War II.
