Full Circle; By Dean Lowe

Harry Chapin once sang, “All my life’s a circle.” And so it was, I was sitting in a Ford dealership with my son, James, negotiating for his new 6th generation Mustang. He ordered a beautiful dark gray car with a 2.3 liter Ecoboost I-4 cylinder, sending 310 hp to rear wheels, supported by a fully independent rear suspension. Amazingly, that twin scroll turbocharger delivered seamless power with absolutely no perceivable lag! Sure, Mustangs have been boosted before, but this was different. The torque curve was broad and flat and it really accelerates.

Now some might detest the process of haggling with a salesman. Yet I’ve always viewed negotiations as a challenge, though admittedly I haven’t always been successful. Still, my son and I were making memories. During one of those moments (like so many) when the salesman had to “clear something with his manager,” James leaned over to me and told me he thought I should buy one. What? I said, “Mom would shoot me!”

It’s strange how such a small suggestion could grow in my head until I couldn’t get rid of it. About 40 years earlier I bought my first car, a red ’65 C-code Mustang. It coincided with my 16th birthday and new driver’s license. The 1970’s were a perfect time to be a teenager. You could buy a 1960’s Mustang, Camaro or ‘Cuda dirt cheap. Though my Mustang was still in good shape, I couldn’t resist pulling the engine to add performance parts and topping it off with a new coat of red paint. There was never a high school girlfriend that rated more than that car; I had two rules: she couldn’t touch the paint or glass. And if she respected my rules, I’d respect her rules.

My mind went back 50 years: there were no four cylinder Mustangs, no IRS and no direct injection. Today’s Mustang “ain’t your daddy’s Mustang”. But then maybe a Mustang is also an idea or feeling as well. The running horse is still prominently positioned in the center of a large open grill, the hind quarters are still muscular and the tail lights still sport the familiar tri-bar pattern, all styling cues that harken to a time when driving was for fun.

Many hours were spent washing and waxing that car just so it could be unabashedly shown off Saturday night at a drive-in with a date, cruising the main drag with friends or driven to a myriad other places that involved going anywhere in a Mustang so that light could be reflected from its surface (like the ring on a the finger of a newly engaged woman). Once, I even drove it to Seattle to visit a girlfriend. (I should have known that relationship wouldn’t survive when, as I let her drive, she adjusted the rear view mirror by tapping the glass with two fingers.) The point is, a teenager’s thoughts are governed not only by his hormones, but also by his car. At some point, I realized that I must have signed some document asserting that I would faithfully uphold and defend “cardom”: a fraternal organization only car guys belong to.

As it turns out, I am very fortunate to have a wife who is very supportive of her car guy- within reason, of course. Unfortunately, automobiles require capital and storage space. And with five vehicles (one of them in storage, sapping capital resources) and two motorcycles, something had to go if I were to procure the all-new Mustang. Problem solved: I sold a car and paid a visit to my local Ford dealer.

The boxes were checked. My new Mustang was ordered as a Ruby Red GT Premium with the 50 Years Appearance Package. Oh, and it had to have the six speed manual transmission. Every time I drive this Mustang I think (mostly to myself), “I love this car.” With 435 hp at my disposal and supercar turning and braking characteristics (yet affordably priced), the Mustang has galloped into the 21st century.

Still, after all these years, I am grateful that Lee Iacocca approached Henry Ford II in the early 60’s and sold the idea of building a sports car for the blue oval brand. He took the economy-oriented Falcon and created a performance icon. Many iterations have come and gone in the last 50 years (some more desirable than others), yet that emotional feeling still exists. A feeling can’t always be articulated, but is felt nonetheless. Today, that sculpted equine evokes both memories from the past and excitement for today’s 6th generation Mustang. Somehow I ended up where I began all those years ago. I am very fortunate to be able to, as Harry Chapin stated, “go around one more time”.

Editors Note: We all have Mustang stories: I was a student at the University of Utah and developed a strong friendship with really great fellow from Dayton, Ohio who I will call GB. GB was someone that I looked up to and I guess that I may have been a little envious of him when he started dating this really beautiful dark haired girl. (I had no dating prospects myself at the time....; So ya !)

Well I became feeling even more passed over by the world when GB's hot girlfriend's picture showed up in the Salt Lake Tribune with her beside a new 1964 Mustang, and with the bragging rights of her being the very first purchaser of the new Ford Mustang from the Salt Lake City Ford dealer.
