Culver City/George Barris Culver City/George Barris Back To The Fifties Car Show Saturday, May 9th, 2009
Ol' Rick went over to the big Culver City & George Barris Show today.
May 9th, 2008. I had planned to bring my '50 Plymouth coupe but woke up
too late to get there in time. The show was different this year; less
cars, more vendors, lots of spectators and a different mix of cars.
There were a bunch of interchangeable muscle cars and Tri-5 Chevies,
dropped in front with American Torque Thrust wheels and blackwalls.
Stockers and mild customs were scarce but there was a whole side
street of hot rod hearses. There were some really nice custom cars
and last year's rat rods are sprouting fine paint jobs and are
becoming more finished. While the general quality of the cars is
improving, there is less whimsy and more uniformity to the styles. I,
personally prefer stock-ish cars and my photos reflect this. Wild
paint jobs and Metalflake is coming back to customs and the line has
been blurred between low riders and custom cars.

1929 Model A roadster
This full fendered 1929 Model A roadster looked like to drove right off of one of my model shelves - I especially like the 15" wheels all around with the big and little tires, just like in the 1960s - Most increase the wheel size along with the tire size on back today - looks fine but loses that proper nostalgic look - this one was powered by a 289 Ford, A nice little powerplant that will fit under the hood, if desired. |
