Terraplanes were built by the Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan between 1932 and 1938. In its maiden year, the car was branded as the Essex-Terraplane. In 1934 the car became simply the Terraplane. The name was phased out in 1938 as the Hudson-Terraplane. Full story by Wayne Graefen, 2010....-pdf

In the middle of 1932, Amelia Earhart introduced the Essex-Terraplane which was built with an entirely new engineering and construction concept.
