Porsche 956
Porsche's first monocoque car was the Type 956, an endurance racecar. The 956 was a development extension of the very successful 936 which replaced, of course, the 935. The 956 was to be available as a customer car and was built to European and Le Mans specifications. However the 956 cars did not meet the North American IMSA races standards.

Porsche soon modified the 956 into the Type 962 by extending the wheelbase and modifying the 2.8 L, 6 cylinder engine. With a few final body changes, the new 962 entered the 1984 Daytona 24 hour race.
