The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion once again took place at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 16-19. This reunion of historic race cars has a long history. It has taken place since 1974. This year the Shelby Cobra was the automotive marque given special recognition. Cobras rallied from far and wide.

A field of 550 historic race cars divided into 17 groups took to the race track Laguna Seca in spirited competition. Saturday's feature race listed 45 Cobras as entries. Competitors hailed from 10 nations with US entrants numbering 547. The US entries came from 28 states with the largest contingent of 348 from California.

The Cobra car corral was truly stunning! The Cobras on display were absolutely beautiful! Not only that, but they were numerous - there was a veritable sea of Cobras. The show preparation of the Cabras was extraordinary! They were show prepared in great detail looking just perfect. The array of ingenious paint colors, types, and combinations on the cars was a revelation. Uncommon paint combinations were present in all their polished, lustrous glory, including a model finished in a chrome-like metal. A number of the seldom seen Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupes were also in the corral.

The corral featured an incredible display of Cobras and other Ford powered exotic cars including some DeTomaso Panteras, and a track-menacing Saleen S7. A row of Ford GTs was also there with the rear bodywork raised to display the supercharged engines.

The very interesting Shelby Cobra Heritage Display was housed in a large tent. The display featured 12 Cobras with notable historical significance.

Some of the cars on track and in the corral boasted serious competitive histories. At least two had won in the past at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe won the GT III Class at Le Mans, and the Saleen S7 won the GT1 class there. The Ford GT was the follow on street version of the Ford GT40 which had won the overall race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans It doesn't get much better than that.

This event is always a great competitive forum of historic racers. But there is so much off track to see also.
