One of three factory built team cars built for Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme to contest the Can-Am series in 1967. This car, chassis M6A-3, was never raced in 1967, and sold at the end of the season along with chassis M6A-1, the championship winning car, to Roger Penske. Chassis #2 (Denny's car) was kept by the McLaren team and converted into the M8A development car and then scrapped.
In 1968, Penske hired Mark Donohue to drive M6A-1 in the United States Road Racing Championship, and this car (M6A-3) in the Can-Am series later in the year. Donohue, one of the greatest driver/engineers of all time, helped transform the car into this one-off variation of the winning M6A design. The car was fitted with a 7.0-liter Chevy, wider tires and wheels, and extensively modified body to accommodate the wider stance. Other body modifications included lower front fenders and a large rear spoiler.
