2015 IndyCar Series Sonoma Raceway started with the remembrance to the fallen beloved Justin Wilson who was the victim of a freak accident at Pocono Raceway when he was hit in the head with a nose cone from a car which had just hit the wall in front of him.

Life in the fast lane for Juan Pablo Montoya came to disappointment at Sonoma Raceway at the 2015 season's final race, when he touched the back of team mate, Will Power, car and damaged his front wing. The resultant pit stop move Juan back far enough that even with several retiring cars he could not move into the 5th spot to gain the points need to that the series championship. After leading the series in points all season and coming to Sonoma with a 34 point lead, Juan's 6th place finish points at Sonoma only tied him with this race winner, Scott Dixon who was 47 points behind Montoya when the green flag dropped. But Scott had the tie-breaker with more races won, making Dixon the 2015 IndyCar Series winner.
Scott Dixon drove a steady smart race and moved up from a 9th place grid position into the lead during a pitstop on a yellow. Once in the lead Dixon held on with a good lead to end.
Series contenders ranking moved up and down as the positions changed through out the day on the twisty and tight Sonoma Road Course. The main drama of the day was when, running in a tight group into Turn 5, Will Power moved into the line of his teammate Juan and the cars touched, spinning Power off the track, with no damage to Will's car but damaging Juan's very delicate front wing.
The IndyCar's point scoring system was a hot topic at the end of the race as both the Indy 500 and the last race of the season, Sonoma this year, gave double points in the scoring, mathematically placing Dixon in a challenging position with Montoya.
A odd call on a full course Yellow, when a car lost full power and was way off pace but still moving around the track, changed up the track, as all yellows do, but this did not seem to be a racing issue but an over-played officials call.
Another bit of head scratching was when one driver came to a complete stop in pit lane, allowing his teammate a more easily exit out of his pit box, but then blocking another car completely from exiting his box thus sending him through the box in front and over an air hose. All and all a very exciting end to the season with cars off track and into each other, all standard stuff at Sonoma Raceway.
