APAL Cars
APAL Cars Photos and Stories.
A Belgium-based dune buggy and Porsche Speedster replica manufacturer, Application Polyester Armé de Liège, or APAL for short, made a run of 150 road cars Between 1961 and 1965, APAL created roughly 150 lightweight fiberglass bodies which resembled the Porsche 356B Abarth Carrera They were then attached to a stretched Volkswagen Beetle floor pan giving a wheelbase about a foot longer than that of a 356. Of these sleek 1600 GT just around 30 examples received Porsche 356 drive-trains consisting of 356 transaxles, full independent suspension, wheels, and drum brakes on all four corners. The interior features Porsche front seats, (no rear seats), trim work, instrument dials, and steering wheel. The finished car was said to weigh in at just 1,400 pounds, making the power-to-weight superior to the Porsche 356 cars.
