Plug-In 2010 Car Show

Plug-In 2010 A Four-Day International Conference
Plug-In 2010 Conference & Exposition, San Jose, California, an interactive international gathering of automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, electric utilities, government agencies, the environmental community and academia.

AllCarCentral.com had the pleasure to attend and report on the San Jose, CA "Plug-In 2008", its Inaugural Three-Day International Conference. At that event, the exhibitors were displaying concept vehicle and systems and energy management systems. The floor was mostly covered by early players in the electrical vehicle market.

Plug-in 2010 displayed a more matured set of exhibitors. The emphases appeared to be on vehicle recharging systems addressing the plug-in aspect of the electric rechargeable car. One unique vender was an electric transformer manufacture, "Evatran" that had developed a proximity charging system which allowed vehicles to charge their batteries by simply parking the vehicle over the special charging pad. Providing the Evatran system owners truly "Hands-Free" charging.

Two main players were front and center on the conference floor with electric cars. The Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf were first in line as one entered the floor demonstrating the support by these two companies. Ford had brought an Escape Plug-in Hybrid and an electric Focus. The Leaf is fully electrical and is propelled by the electrical system. The Volt is moved with the electrical motor but can also be charged using the on-board internal combustion engine to drive the on-board charging system as well as plugged in to an standard current outlet. The Escape Plug-in Hybrid uses the a combination of electrical and internal combustion to power the SUV.

Mitsubishi was displaying their iMiEV cars as part of the Eaton Corporations display of charging systems and Toyota was set up with a hybrid sporting a Silicon Valley Leadership Group banner. This was a solid showing of the Plug-in technology with the large car manufactures on board.

Battery technology is still in the forefront of being the major hurdle which must be overcome, however as technology demands, the worlds great minds step up and brings about the solution.

One of the things that I came away with is this. The world has seen that the electric/battery car is ready to hit the road and the manufactures are serious. Re-fueling or charging opportunities can be seen as a serious limiting factor to wide acceptance. With this show displaying a broad array of cars and recharging hardware the only thing left is hooking the recharging stations to the grid and having the real estate to place them on.

A One-Night Event on July 27 Offered an Insider's Look at a Plugged-In Transportation Future. Public was invited to See Plug-In Vehicles First-Hand.

Vehicles scheduled for display (subject to change): Chevrolet Volt, 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid, Mitsubishi i MiEV, Nissan LEAF, 2010 Prius Plug-In, smart fortwo electric drive, a range-extended electric chassis and more.

The leading edge in transportation. Plug-in technology will address all critical areas of plug-in vehicles including batteries, vehicles and infrastructure, and discussions will be structured around technology aspects, market research, policy initiatives, and commercialisation.

Breakout session of "unparalleled breadth and depth of content, delivered from working experts on a wide range of topics" were available over the 4 days.

A long list of topics covered. Below are a few examples.

• Electric Drive Technologies for PHEV & Electric Vehicles

• An insider's look at automakers' development of PHEV technology for near-term deployment

• A focused review of the technologies used in current demonstration and deployment programs

• How will battery technology integrate with the complete vehicle system?

• Infrastructure to Support Electric Drive

• Modeling and simulation efforts around PHEV and EV technology development

• How non-road technologies can reduce emissions and improve your bottom line

• Vehicle technology, costs, etc. for today and tomorrow

• Current vehicle test programs - performance, reliability and emissions

Exhibitors include; Nissan North America, displaying the all-electric LEAF, and General Motors, showing the extended-range electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt. for more information
