Robert Paxton McCulloch of the chain saw company set up an automotive division, Paxton Automotive of Los Angeles, California under his middle name and produced the Paxton Phoenix prototype in 1953. The body was fiberglass with other unique features, such as a telescoping steering wheel, power door openers and a mechanical hardtop that retracted and covered the trunk .

The Paxton Phoenix was a rear-engine coupe prototype with Engine options that considered an alternative fuel steam engine, based on earlier Abner Doble design and a two-cycle gasoline engine with a McCulloch/Paxton supercharger. The prototype was powered by a Porsche 356 engine for demonstration purposes.
