20th THE CALIFORNIA MILLE
1000 miles throughout Northern California
over 4 days
The 20th California Mille is themed as the "Lost Coast--rediscovered" reaching such picturesque places as Honeydew (population 73), the majesty of the Avenue of the Giants. The Tour is a salute to Italy's famed Mille Miglia (thousand mile) open road race, which was last run in 1957.
The tour will have around 70 historic race cars that could have qualified for the original Italian event in
1927-1957 leaving San Francisco's Nob Hill's Fairmont Hotel for a 1,000 mile run which will last for 4 days.
After a full-day, free car show on Mason Street between Sacramento and California in front of the Fairmont Hotel
on April 25, the Mille heads off on April 26 north to the first nights stop at Calistoga with a stop along the way to pay tribute to Gil Nickel a longtime supporter of historic race cars at the Nickel & Nickel Winery.
Last year after the photo shoot, my lovely shooting assistant an I engaged in a search for a glass of the famous California wine within the Nob Hill splendor, but were greeted with closed doors, (we were looking during off hours it seems). This year we had much better luck and took refuge within the grand dinning and bar lounge just off the main Fairmont Hotel lobby. A wonderful California Pinot Noir was my reward.
